He told the Oxford Mail: “I think we’re going to have to do some business very quickly, because you can see how low we are on numbers. It’s been slow, but we’re just waiting to see.

“This is a big week because we’re 50 per cent of the way through pre-season. The players who have done all the training and games look in great shape, but they need support now, they really do. We need to start making some signings.”

Robinson added the biggest decision will come down to how long he waits for his top transfer targets, or if he should decide to approach those lower down the list.

The U’s have been linked with a number of players in this window. Chris Cadden has been linked for some time, whilst he’s also been linked with Sunderland and Columbus Crew, but a loan move to Oxford appears likely to go through.

Robinson is also to make a decision on Motherwell teammate, Elliott Frear, who has impressed as a trialist in the U’s pre-season matches, scoring in the draw at Woking.

Robinson said: “We know he has that and we know he can stretch the game and his delivery’s not bad either. But how intricate can he be in the final third when teams sit on the edge of the box? Teams do that to us.”

The U’s also plan to speak to Jon Guthrie’s agent today. The former Walsall man also impressed whilst in trial, and the centre back could be on his way to the Kassam.

But the U’s have also missed targets. Jorge Grant, who was linked with the U’s, signed for League One rivals, Lincoln City, and two loanees from last season in Jerome Sinclair and Luke Garbutt have gone elsewhere, despite interest from Robinson.

And there are still uncertainties. We await news on the links between Oxford with Kilmarnock defender, Stuart Findlay, and Sheffield United striker, Ched Evans.
