Cardiff Confirm Whyte Signing

|

Cardiff City have completed the signing of Oxford United winger Gavin Whyte for an undisclosed fee.

He is the second Oxford player to join the Bluebirds this summer after Curtis Nelson made the move following the expiry of his contract.

It is a bitter blow for Karl Robinson, with the U’s failing to make significant strides during this transfer window.

The manager stuck a £4 million price tag on the Northern Ireland international after he attracted interest from Nottingham Forest, but it is believed Cardiff have signed the winger for £2 million with add-ons.

The fee itself is a blow to Robinson, but the U’s boss said last week that despite it not meeting his valuation, it’s still an impressive turnover after the League One side paid £100,000 just last summer.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock told the clubs official website: “I watched a lot of Gavin while we were scouting Curtis Nelson. He just excited me so much. He’s full of enthusiasm and is just the type of player that we were looking for.”

Now Oxford must turn all of their attention on finding replacements. In the last 24 hours, the U’s have been linked with Liverpool’s Ben Woodburn and Nottingham Forests Gboly Ariyiby, but are still in the hunt fora striker and centre back.
