Oxford United defender Rob Atkinson has emerged as a potential transfer target for Bristol City, according to Robins’ reporter, Gregor MacGregor.

The 22-year-old has had an impressive debut season in the Football League, having joined from Eastleigh in January 2020 before returning to the Spitfires on loan until the end of the season.

Atkinson is under contract at Grenoble Road until 2023, meaning the Robins would need to pay a transfer fee for the defender, who was also named in the League One Team of the Season.

The defender made 44 appearances for the U’s this season, where he scored twice. His partnership alongside Elliott Moore has been a stable feature for the club this season.

If Atkinson was to depart, it would follow the club’s successful model of bringing through young talents before selling them fit a substantial fee. Last summer, the U’s sold defender Rob Dickie to Queens Park Rangers for a seven-figure fee.
