Classic Clash: Oxford United 3-0 Wycombe Wanderers (2015/16)

|

We go back to the last time the U’s won promotion for this classic clash between Oxford and Wycombe.

Under Michael Appleton, the U’s enjoyed a tremendous 2015/16 season, and a win over Wycombe on the final day would see the club back in the third tier just ten years after suffering relegation into the Conference.

Over the course of the season, Oxford had seen off Premier League side Swansea City in the FA Cup third round, hit four past Brentford at Griffin Park in the first round of the League Cup and reached the Football League Trophy final, before ending the campaign with promotion to League One.

Despite a nervy and goalless first half, defender Chey Dunkley smashed home a header shortly after the restart to send the yellow army into raptures.

Chris Maguire converted from the penalty spot after Kemar Roofe was fouled in the box before Oxford-born Callum O’Dowda scored a sensational solo effort with time running out.

The result meant that Oxford had made a return to the third tier for the first time since the 2000/01 season.
