Curtis Nelson leaves Oxford to join Cardiff City

|

Defender Curtis Nelson has signed for Cardiff City following the club’s relegation to the Championship.

The 26-year-old, who rejected a new deal with Oxford United, joins Neil Warnock as the Bluebirds look to seal a return to the Premier League.

On Sunday 16th June, Simon Jones at the Daily Mail reported that the Championship side had agreed a deal with Nelson.

The 26-year-old now arrives at The Cardiff City Stadium on a two-year deal.

Despite only suffering relegation from the Premier League on the penultimate weekend of the season, Cardiff need many improvements ahead of next term. Warnock’s side conceded 69 goals in the campaign, the fourth worst in the division, and scored the third lowest amount of goals.

In May, Oxford manager Karl Robinson offered the defender a new deal, but the defender rejected the offer.

For the U’s, it was an inevitable situation after Robinson stripped Nelson of the captaincy. Nelson, unfortunately for the club, had run his contract down, allowing the defender to leave on a free.

Although the U’s spent the best part of £280,000 for the defender from Plymouth, he had three solid seasons at the Kassam Stadium, and will undoubtedly be missed.

Now, Robinson must focus his attention on recruiting for a replacement. It is unknown who will replace Nelson as the first choice centre back, making the decision not to sign someone sooner, slightly odd.
