EFL Propose Salary Caps for League’s One and Two

|

The EFL are proposing an introduction of squad salary caps for sides in Leagues One and Two, as reported by the Telegraph.

The report suggests a figure of just £2.5 million for League One, while League Two clubs will be limited to £1.25 million.

The EFL are also proposing automatic points deductions for clubs who fail to pay any players on time, which is something that has been an issue across the lower leagues for the past number of seasons.

It is also reported that clubs from League’s One and Two are being asked to vote on reducing their squad sizes, with just 20 players of 21-years-old and over per squad. In addition, eight of those players will be home-grown.

Currently on average, League One have 28 senior players while League Two have 26. The restrictions won’t apply to players aged under 21 as a bid to help push youth development.

If a vote is agreed, it is hoped that the changes could come into play as early as next season. However, clubs will be given a season to adjust their squad numbers. Clubs relegated from the Championship will also have a one-year transition to reduce their squad.

Oxford have 30 players in their squad, including loanees and players currently out on loan, but have nine players under 21 registered as first-team players. They also have the third-highest value in League One.
