Oxford United goalkeeper Simon Eastwood has been linked with a move away for a while now. If, or when that day comes, the U’s will need to replace him with someone equally as good, which won’t be easy considering he has been a key player since his arrival in 2016.

Jack Stevens is Eastwood’s understudy, but it’s unlikely he can fill the void anytime soon, so here are five out of contract goalkeepers that Oxford could look to bring in this summer. Obviously, it could depend entirely on which division the club are in next season, as promotion to the Championship could attract a different kind of player.

Jon McLaughlin

Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin is the first on our list. The 32-year-old, who has been with the Black Cats since 2018, has made 90 appearances for the club. Despite uncertainty over a new deal, the Scottish international won’t be short of offers, with Blackburn Rovers reportedly interested in the shot-stoppers’ services.

Jordan Archer

Jordan Archer spent time at Oxford this season but left in January to join Fulham once his short term deal had ended. The former Millwall man arrived in December and helped the U’s through a busy festive period following the injury to Simon Eastwood. The 26-year-old conceded just seven goals in eight games, with three coming against Manchester City. Since joining Fulham, Archer is yet to be named in a matchday squad, which could open up a return.

Ben Amos

Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Ben Amos has fallen out of favour at the Valley, so a summer move could be on the cards. The 30-year-old, who worked with Karl Robinson when he was in charge at the London club, could be a decent acquisition for the U’s, given his experience between the sticks. The former England youth player has spent most of his career in the Championship, somewhere the U’s are hoping to be.

Marek Štěch

Like Amos, 30-year-old Marek Štěch has also fallen out of favour at Luton Town, with two goalkeepers ahead of him. As a result, the former Czech Republic international would seek a move elsewhere in the summer. Štěch joined the Hatters from Sparta Prague, but has spent much of his career in England.

Declan Rudd

One player that is playing in the Championship but hasn’t fallen out of favour is Preston North End number one, Declan Rudd. The 29-year-old has played every game this season for the Lilywhites but is yet to sign a new deal. For Oxford to acquire someone of Rudd’s qualities, you would have to expect the U’s to secure promotion and to put down a decent wage to lure him to the club.
