Former Oxford Boss Takes The Helm At League One Rivals

|

Former Oxford United manager, Michael Appleton, has joined League One rivals Lincoln City as the clubs new boss following the departure of Danny Cowley.

The U’s travel to Sincil Bank tomorrow, but Appleton will have to wait until next Friday for his first game when the Imps Travel to Blackpool.

Appleton was highly thought of at Oxford, winning promotion to League One and reaching consecutive Football League Trophy finals at Wembley.

During his time with Oxford, the U’s achieved impressive cup runs too, overcoming the likes of Swansea City and Newcastle United in the FA Cup, something Lincoln fans are familiar with given their recent cup runs.

His model of bringing in fresh, young and enthusiastic players from higher divisions worked whilst at Oxford, with the likes of Kemar Roofe, John Lundstram and George Baldock all joining the U’s in League Two.

Prior to joining the U’s, his managerial record had been relatively unimpressive, with short spells at West Brom, Portsmouth, Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers.

After leaving Oxford, Appleton took up the assistant manager role at Leicester City, and became caretaker manager following Craig Shakespeare’s sacking.

But, he left shortly after whilst working alongside Claude Puel, and returned to the Hawthorns as the Under 23 manager.
