Further Delay Announced by EFL

|

A conclusion to this seasons League One campaign has been delayed further after a statement from the EFL confirmed an extension until June 8.

Many clubs were hoping a decision would have been met es early as next week following a vote, but that’s not the case.

The Premier League has been given the green light to continue from June 17, but the EFL are facing yet more delays.

Two options remain; Play the remaining fixtures, which is something favoured by the Championship, or use an unweighted points per game (PPG) system to decide final standings.

The second option is the preferred choice of League Two clubs but League One remains undecided. If the latter option is used, which looks the most likely, Oxford would finish fourth and face the prospect of the playoffs.

The statement read: “A decision on whether or not to curtail the season is a matter to be considered by clubs in any affected division, but only once a framework for resolving open issues in such circumstances has been agreed by all members across all divisions through a regulation change.”

Even if the decision is made on June 8, testing protocol and bringing players back up to match fitness would likely delay a return until July.
