Oxford United have boosted their midfield options with the addition of Herbie Kane, who joins on loan from Barnsley.

The 22-year-old joined the Tykes in 2020 for £1.25 million from Liverpool and made 26 appearances for the Championship club last season.

Born in Bristol, Kane came through the academy at Bristol City before joining Liverpool at the age of 15. He enjoyed a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers, where he scored seven times from 49 outings, and spent time on loan at Hull City during their spell in the Championship.

Kane made just one senior appearance for Liverpool in the League Cup against Aston Villa.

Speaking to the club’s official website, U’s boss Karl Robinson said: “He is a player we have monitored for a while.

“He was in the same Liverpool Academy sides as Cameron Brannagan and Ben Woodburn so we know what he brings to the squad and we believe he will strengthen us in a really key area of the pitch.“

Kane added: “I’m looking forward to it. I watched the game against Lincoln at the weekend and Oxford were really impressive.

“I know they like to play football, you could certainly see that on Saturday, so hopefully that suits my game.

“The Gaffer spoke really well about the way the whole club is building here and I can’t wait to play my part in that.”
