League One Preview: Oxford United v Sheffield Wednesday – Team News, Form and Prediction

|

Oxford United will be looking for their first win of 2022 when Sheffield Wednesday visit Grenoble Road on Saturday.

The U’s drew 1-1 on New Year’s Day against Cheltenham before successive 2-0 defeats on the road against Lincoln and Wycombe respectively.

As for Wednesday, they recorded a 4-2 win over Plymouth last time out but that followed defeats on the road at Shrewsbury and Sunderland. Darren Moore’s side are three points behind the U’s and have played a game less.

Oxford have lost just twice at home this season but Wednesday’s away record is respectable with 18 points from 14 matches.

Cameron Brannagan and Jordan Thorniley both returned against the Chairboys but Herbie Kane is still sidelined through suspension. Jack Stevens, Anthony Forde, Billy Bodin and Dan Agyei all played 90 minutes in a behind closed doors friendly on Tuesday.

Jack Hunt and Florian Kamberi are all doubtful for the visitors. Former U’s players Chey Dunkley and Mide Shodipo are also ruled out along with Dominic Iorfa and Lewis Gibson.

Florian Kamberi and Lee Gregory have added 13 goals between them this season while Sylla Sow and Dennis Adeniran have provided three goals each.

Oxford’s win at Hillsborough earlier this season was their first victory on the road of the campaign. The previous three meetings between the two sides have all come in cup competitions with one win each and a draw. Wednesday’s last visit to Oxford was a 2-2 draw in December 1990.

Predicted line-up: Simon Eastwood, Steve Seddon, Jordan Thorniley, Elliott Moore, Sam Long, Marcus McGuane, Cameron Brannagan, James Henry, Nathan Holland, Mark Sykes, Matty Taylor.

Prediction: Oxford United 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday
