Match Report: Carabao Cup – Oxford United 4-0 West Ham United

Oxford United have secured their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after an emphatic 4-0 win over Premier League outfit, West Ham United.

Second-half goals from Elliott Moore, Matty Taylor, Tariqe Fosu and Shandon Baptiste sealed another monumental victory for the Karl Robinson’s side, who recorded their record away win in the Football League on Saturday.

The U’s boss made six changes to the side that started Saturday’s 6-0 hammering of Lincoln City, with George Thorne making his first start and Rob Hall getting a chance against his former club.

Sam Long, Moore, Baptiste and Anthony Forde also came into the line-up.

Simon Eastwood remained in goal, with Josh Ruffels on the left and Long on the right of defence, and Moore partnered Rob Dickie in the centre.

Thorne started the game in between the defence and midfield, a role Alex Rodriguez Gorrin made look easy in the win over the Imps, with Cameron Brannagan and Baptiste ahead of him.

Forde and Hall replaced hat-trick hero Fosu and James Henry on the wings respectively, while Jamie Mackie, who also scored on Saturday, started up front.

Despite naming a strong side, West Ham were up against it early doors against a resurgent Oxford side.

Hall had a shot blocked before Brannagan struck the rebound wide. Moments later, Baptiste found Forde, but his effort was weak.

Shortly after, Thorne, who had just returned from injury, came off worse in a challenge and was unable to continue and Mark Sykes replaced the on-loan Derby man.

Baptiste won a free-kick midway through the half, but Hall struck the bar in what was the last clear chance of the opening 45.

The U’s were as authoritative in the second half and took the lead against the Hammers just ten minutes after the restart.

Sykes picked the ball up after West Ham failed to clear a free-kick, and Moore kept his composure in the box to open the scoring.

The Hammers goalkeeper was busy, denying Mackie, but his replacement Taylor doubled the hosts lead shortly after. Sykes rolled the ball across the box as Taylor tapped home his second goal in as many games, his first at the Kassam.

West Ham made the changes, with striker Sebastien Haller, Felipe Anderson and Mark Noble all coming on, but United continued to probe.

Fosu took advantage of a defensive error to run through before rounding the goalkeeper to score a third before academy graduate Baptiste added a spectacular fourth in stoppage time.

It was another fantastic achievement for the U’s, who will now welcome Sunderland to the Kassam in the fifth round.
