Newcastle United are the latest club to show interest in Oxford United defender, Rob Dickie, according to Alan Nixon at The Sun.

The 24-year-old defender has come on leaps and bounds since his arrival from Reading in January 2018, and has become one of the most sought after centre backs in the Football League.

Last season, Dickie turned out 49 times as the U’s ended the season in fourth, before losing out in the League One play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers. Oxford also reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and took Newcastle to a replay in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

It always looked likely that Dickie would depart ahead of the new season, with Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United among the numerous clubs to have shown interest.

And although Premier League sides Burnley and Southampton reportedly showed interest earlier in the year, a potential bid from the Magpies is the closest to a top-flight move the U’s defender has come.

However, there is the issue of the fee. The report suggests that Steve Bruce is willing to pay around £2 million for the 24-year-old. But U’s boss Karl Robinson will be holding out for more, despite the knock-on effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
