On-Loan Striker to Wait Until Summer Before Contract Talks

|

Oxford United striker Matty Taylor has said that he will have discussions about a new deal at the club, but only once the season has finished.

The 29-year-old is on loan from Bristol City, but out of contract at the Championship club in the summer.

Taylor netted a late winner, and his 17th goal of the season, as the U’s edged past relegation-threatened Southend United on Saturday, with the striker scoring six from his last four games to regain the clubs promotion charge.

Although the majority of supporters want to see the Oxford-born striker sign permanently, Taylor wants to wait until the season is over before making a decision.

He told the Oxford Mail: “I think in January I knew Bristol (City) had a recall option which, to be honest, I didn’t want, I wanted to stay here and keep playing football and scoring goals.

“I’m a free agent come the summer and we’ll sit down and have those conversations I’m sure.

“I don’t want it to distract me at the moment because I’m enjoying my football and scoring goals.

“I’ll put it to one side and there will be a time and a place for that conversation. Fingers crossed, I’d love to get promoted but it’s a long way off and we’ve not achieved anything yet.”

Manager Karl Robinson, who was looking to secure the striker on a permanent basis during the January transfer window, added: “At any level, if you’ve got a goalscorer in your ranks it’s important you keep them.”

Taylor has been a key figure for Robinson this season. Not only has he scored braces on three separate occasions (Southend United, AFC Wimbledon and Accrington Stanley), but the striker has scored crucial goals in five keys games, almost single-handedly earning the U’s an extra eleven points.

The striker also scored against West Ham United and Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, but with ten league games remaining, can the striker reach 20 goals for the campaign?
