On This Day – 1992: Win At Tranmere Completes Great Escape

|

Saturday, May 2, 1992 – the day that Oxford United completed the great escape and avoided relegation of the final day of the 1991/92 season.

Brian Horton’s side headed to Tranmere in need of at least one point, along with other results to go their way, to avoid relegation from Division 2.

Over 1,500 Oxford fans made the trip to Birkenhead, and it was a good start when John Durnin gave the U’s a valuable lead in the second half. However, former Oxford striker John Aldridge levelled with his 40th goal of the season just two minutes later. But with 25 minutes remaining, Joey Beauchamp, who had missed a handful of chances in the opening half, restored the visitors’ lead.

Oxford may have secured the win but they were awaiting news from the game between Plymouth and Blackburn. A win for Rovers meant that the Pilgrims would suffer relegation and the U’s avoided the drop, maintaining their Division 2 status.
