Oxford United and League One rivals Sunderland are said to be interested in a January move for Barnsley winger Luke Thomas, according to Gloucestershire Live.

Having started his career at Cheltenham Town, the 21-year-old joined Derby County before spending time on loan at Gloucester City and Coventry City. He joined the Tykes in the summer of 2019, having impressed with the Sky Blues, and has gone on to 58 appearances for the Championship outfit.

However, since Valerien Ismael took over at Barnsley two months ago, Thomas has been out of favour and has started just two matches.

His time at Oakwell has been promising. Having scored the winner on his debut against Fulham, the 21-year-old had a successful first season as the Reds avoided the drop.

On the pitch, he only managed two goals last season and is yet to open his account this campaign, but has provided three assists in all competitions.

The Tykes are under no illusions to sell, but with two League One sides looking at the winger, a January loan move would be a good move for all parties.
