Former Oxford United teammates Andy Whing and James Constable have been reunited after the two have taken up managerial roles at Banbury United.

Whing, who made over 100 appearances for the U’s over a four year period, has taken over as The Puritans’ new manager, succeeding former Oxford defender Mike Ford, while Constable will be his new assistant manager but will also be registered as a player.

It is Whing’s first venture into management following coaching spells with the U’s, Kidderminster Harriers and Hereford.

The Southern League Premier Central Division side were just one point outside the playoffs in 7th before the season was declared null and void.

Chairman Phil Lines told the club’s website: “Andy is a young hungry manager with drive and enthusiasm who wants to make a success of football management. We hope his time with us proves successful and will help him achieve that.

“Although this is his first manager’s job, for the past 4-5 years he has coached at Oxford United, Kidderminster Harriers and had a short spell at Hereford working under Russell Slade. He has very good contacts in the game.”

The 35-year-old enjoyed a solid playing career, turning out for Coventry City, Brighton and Hove Albion, Chesterfield and Leyton Orient, before ending his playing days at Oxford United.

During his time with the U’s, Whing won the Supporters’ Player of the Season award in 2012, while Constable is also a fan favourite, ending his U’s days just one goal shy of equaling the club record.
