Oxford to Face Sunderland in Carabao Cup

After thumping Premier League side West Ham United in the third round of the Carabao Cup, Oxford United will host League One rivals Sunderland in the fourth round.

It’s the first time the U’s have reached this stage of the competition since 1997, and they haven’t made the fifth round since 1988, two years after they won the competition.

The draw has favoured the lower league sides. All twelve Premier League sides are facing each other, while there is an all League Two affair when Crawley Town host Colchester United.

Oxford don’t have a great record against Sunderland, with their last victory over the Black Cats coming in 1994.

But, in more recent times, the two sides have drawn all three League One games when facing each other, including a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light on the opening day of this season.

Sunderland also knocked out Premier League opposition to set up their tie with the U’s, knocking out former U’s boss Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United at Brammall Lane.
