Oxford United to Rotate Captaincy

|

Karl Robinson has said that the U’s will rotate the captaincy next season.

John Mousinho will remain club captain, but Robinson wants to instill a sense of collective responsibility around the club.

Robinson told the Oxford Mail: “We’re going to have group captains. We’re going to band it into age groups. When you have one person, the players look to him for guidance, but what when he’s injured?  As a collective, they should all be able to take responsibility.”

He also confirmed “Mous will be the club captain – that’s important, because what you do need as a manager is the middle man that you can go to.”

Last season, the U’s had a number of players fill in as captain. Curtis Nelson was stripped of the captaincy amid contract uncertainty, before installing Mousinho as the permanent skipper.

Young midfielder, Shandon Baptiste, skippered the side in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, whilst Cameron Brannagan and Jamie Mackie have also donned the armband.

I can see what Robinson is thinking. With Mousinho not featuring in every game last term, which is also likely to be the case this season, the rest of the squad need to take responsibility.

Given the poor start the U’s had last season, the players will need to group together and be proud of what they’re achieving together.
