The U's Matchzone

Oxford Welcome AFC Wimbledon in Carabao Cup First Round

|

Oxford United will face AFC Wimbledon at home in the first round of the Carabao Cup. The tie should take place on Saturday, September 5.

The match is unlikely to be moved due to the fact that the U’s will line up against another side from League One. It falls on an international weekend, so call-ups could have resulted in fixtures being rearranged.

It is the fourth season in a row the U’s have been drawn at home in the first round. Karl Robinson’s side saw off Peterborough United last season, while goals from Marcus Browne and Gavin Whyte were the difference against Coventry City in 2018/19.

The U’s had lost the previous season under Pep Clotet, succumbing to a 3-4 defeat against League Two Cheltenham Town, despite leading the game 3-1.

The U’s reached the last eight last season, losing out to eventual winners Manchester City.

Since the two sides first met in 2011, the U’s have a far superior record against the Dons. Oxford have registered 11 wins and three draws from 18 meetings. Karl Robinson’s side also picked up six points when the sides met last season, with a 2-1 win on the road and a 5-0 victory at the Kassam Stadium just before lockdown.

Only one of the Dons’ four victories came at Grenoble Road back in 2016 – a result which moved them above rivals MK Dons for the first time in their history.
