Preview: League One – Oxford United vs Northampton Town

|

Oxford United welcome fellow strugglers Northampton Town to Grenoble Road on Tuesday night.

The U’s are unbeaten in three league games, drawing against Ipswich, Hull and Blackpool. However, as a result, Karl Robinson’s side have failed to win in five.

Cobblers have lost their last two league games but were unbeaten in their previous three, which included two victories.

The U’s are just two points behind their opponents but are only clear of the bottom four on goal difference.

Marcus McGuane was the only injury concern for the game against Blackpool but he started. He may be rested for the game, while the club assesses the knock that defender Rob Atkinson took at Bloomfield Road.

Joe Martin will miss the game for the visitors after he was sent off in the defeat against Crewe, while Cian Bolger and Shaun McWilliams are also suspended.

Former Oxford winger Ricky Holmes opened his Cobblers account against Crewe since his return to the club, while former U’s goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell is on loan from Derby.

Harry Smith has netted four times while Sam Hoskins has added three. Keith Curle has several players with two goals, including Ricky Korboa, Danny Rose and Mark Marshall.

The Cobblers have been a bogey time for the U’s in recent years. In fact, Northampton are unbeaten against Oxford in their last eight meetings, which include five wins. Four of those victories came at Grenoble Road. The U’s last success over Northampton came in 2014 when a Danny Hylton Brace helped Oxford to a 3-1 win at Sixfields.

Predicted line-up: Jack Stevens, Josh Ruffels, Rob Atkinson, Elliott Moore, Sam Long, Alex Rodriguez Gorrin, Marcus McGuane, Liam Kelly, Mide Shodipo, James Henry, Matty Taylor.

Prediction: Oxford United 1-0 Northampton Town
