Oxford United defender Rob Atkinson has been named in the SkyBet League One Team of the Season.

The 22-year-old has embedded comfortably in his first season at the club, which is also his first campaign in the Football League.

The former Eastleigh centre back has started 37 league games this season, missing out on seven games through injury. The defender scored his first, and only, goal for the club in a 4-1 win over Shrewsbury Town earlier this month.

Strong in the air and comfortable with his feet, Atkinson has impressed with his displays over the course of the campaign. One of his main strengths is bringing the ball out of defence and creating opportunities for his teammates in attacking areas.

Speaking to the Oxford Mail, Atkinson said: “This time last year, I wouldn’t have imagined I’d be in the team of the season for League One.

“Personally, it’s quite an achievement. The start of the season was tough, there was the red card and the injuries.

“I’d never been sent off before and although it’s not great, it’s an experience and something I can learn from.

“With every game, I feel like I learn something – whether that’s from the coaching staff, my teammates or even the opposite strikers.

“Every game you come up against something different and it’s always a challenge, but one I relish.”

While his defensive partner Elliott Moore and full-backs Josh Ruffels and Sam Long have chipped in with more goals and assists, Atkinson’s maturity has rightfully earned him a place in the Team of the Season.
