Oxford United are looking to tie midfielder Cameron Brannagan down to a new deal with the midfielder having just one year remaining on his current contract.
The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Leeds United and Burnley this season following a string of good performances for the U’s.
Despite being available on a free next summer if he fails to sign a new deal, manager Karl Robinson isn’t concerned right now and hopes the midfielder remains at the club for the upcoming campaign.
Speaking to the Oxford Mail, the U’s boss said: “We’re speaking about a new contract. That’s as much as I can tell you.
“No player will walk out of this building just because they’ve got a year left for less money than we think they’re worth.
“One year is still one year. I don’t think anybody has got that much time to wait for someone any more.
“If I was trying to sign Rob Dickie or Cameron Brannagan and I said ‘we’ll wait for you on a free in 12 months’, there’s a high probability I won’t be the manager.
“It’s the same price whether they’ve got one year or two years left and all the agents know that’s the stance we take.”
Although the Oxford boss looks resigned to losing Dickie during the window, the defender would have been out of contract in the summer had he not penned a one-year extension last year.
Robinson will be hopeful that Brannagan, who has turned out 104 times for the U’s since his arrival in January 2018, will follow suit.
