Robinson Interested in Sunderland Striker

Oxford United manager Karl Robinson has said that he is interested in signing Sunderland striker, Will Grigg.

The 28-year-old, who has scored just three goals in 26 appearances this season, is out of favour at the Stadium of Light and would be keen to explore regular football.

However, Robinson admitted it was a long shot, but with the Northern Ireland international having hit 22 goals at MK Dons while under the management of the U’s boss, it could be a vital link in bringing him to the club.

He told the Oxford Mail: “I want to buy Will Grigg and I want to buy a right-back. There are certain positions I think we need to improve on.

“Griggy is obviously available and is someone I like. I think he can add to what we’ve already got. I think Dan Agyei needs to go out and play on loan.”

Obviously, it won’t be a straightforward transfer. The striker joined the Black Cats from Wigan for around £4 million and his wages would exceed those paid by Oxford.

Sunderland could also fear a transfer to a rival club, despite the forward rejecting a move to League Two.

Robinson added: “We have asked the question, but whether he’s available or not (to United) we just have to wait and see. I just don’t know where things may lie.

“I don’t think it will materialise personally, but I know a lot of people are speculating on it. He is a player I like, if you’re asking me I’d definitely do it.”

With Matty Taylor unlikely to return until Tuesday, the U’s need to add another striker to the club. Agyei is likely to leave on loan, while Jamie Mackie has struggled to find the net this season.

If the move comes off and Grigg rediscovers the form the persuaded the Black Cats to spend big money on him, it could be a sensational signing for the U’s.
