Oxford United defender Sean Clare has joined League One rivals Burton Albion. The 24-year-old departs despite only joining the club in the summer.

However, it’s been a disappointing campaign for the former Hearts man. Signed as a right-back, the midfielder struggled to make his mark, but his performances were exacerbated by the U’s early season form.

After a rest from the starting line-up, manager Karl Robinson began to integrate the 24-year-old into a right-midfield position. Immediately, Clare’s performances improved and he looked a different player.

Robinson gave his views on the move when speaking to the clubs’ official website. “Sean is a terrific person to have around and he’s settled in very well with us off the field but things didn’t quite click for him as a right-back, short-term,” he said.

“That can happen sometimes at a new club but I believe Burton see him playing more in midfield and that will hopefully allow him to get more regular game time, grow in confidence and show what a good player he can be.

“They have games against a lot of the top sides coming up so it’s a good chance for him and we will certainly monitor how he gets on very closely.”
