Spaniard “More Comfortable” In Deeper Midfield Role

Oxford United midfielder Alex Rodriguez Gorrin has revealed that the U’s results have improved since Karl Robinson changed formation.

The 26-year-old started the campaign alongside Cameron Brannagan in the centre of midfield, but the clubs recent upturn in form has been helped largely by a change of tactics, with the Spaniard sitting behind two midfielders.

The U’s kept four successive clean sheets with the new set up, providing additional support to the back four.

Gorrin told the Oxford Mail: “I feel more comfortable in the position I’m playing now.

“I’m in front of a back four and that’s where I used to play last year (for Motherwell). Things are going well and I’m enjoying it.

“On my own, I feel like I read it better. I can cover a lot of ground so I don’t feel like defensively I need someone next to me.

Gorrin often goes unnoticed in matches, but it’s a role that plays huge importance not only defensively, but also in Oxford attacks.

He added: “As long as we win, I don’t mind. I have a very clear idea of what my job is – to get the ball back, win my headers and tackles and keep it simple.”

Robinson said: “People now see we’ve got a bit of an edge. I think Alex Gorrin has given us that.

“We’re very competitive in the middle of the pitch and that allows us to play the football we want to play.”

The U’s welcome Doncaster Rovers to the Kassam tomorrow afternoon, looking to extend their unbeaten run.
