Matty Taylor will be released by Bristol City at the end of the season following the expiry of his contract, according to sources at Bristol Live.

The 30-year-old, who joined the Robins in 2016 from City rivals Rovers, has spent the season on loan with Oxford United, who will be hopeful of signing the forward permanently.

Taylor has found game time hard to come by at Ashton Gate. The striker has made just 75 apps over four years, scoring eight goals while playing just 3,036 minutes for the Championship outfit. To put that into context, Taylor has played 2,322 minutes alone this season at Oxford.

The Oxford-born forward has also scored 17 goals in 34 appearances for the U’s as they look to secure promotion to the Championship, where they face Portsmouth in the League One play-off semi-final.

U’s manager Karl Robinson has identified Taylor as one of his key transfer targets in the summer and now it appears the Robins won’t offer him a new deal, Oxford are in pole position to sign the forward.

The 30-year-old has previously stated this season that he wanted to wait until the end of the season before making a decision about his future. It’s likely he was waiting to see what league the U’s were in and what offers were on the table but as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, he may not have too many options with the wages and contract he is after.
