‘The agent was in this week and we had good conversations’ – U’s Close in on Striker

Oxford United are closing in on bringing a new striker to the club, according to Karl Robinson. The U’s boss, who has signed a new four year deal with the club, believes he will be “as good as it gets in League One.”

With the new League One season kicking off on Saturday, Robinson is pleased with how progressive talks are.

Speaking to the Oxford Mail, the U’s boss said: “The agent was in this week and we had good conversations. If I was a betting man I’d like to think it was done.

“It’s a player that I’ve always liked and who truly knows how much I want him here. I don’t want to force a deadline. He’s an older player and someone who knows this level.

“He’s going to need a pre-season, but we’re prepared to take that risk.”

The U’s cannot spend beyond their means after the EFL introduced a salary cap for clubs in Leagues One and Two. The club have been linked with some more expensive players, but Robinson has said that a move for this striker would be without a transfer fee.

He added: “We’re not going to be silly, we have to work within our budget.

“My job is to never put this football club in any danger financially. We will not break the bank for any player.”

Although he still wants to bring a left-winger and a left-back to the club, those targets have stalled. However, Robinson was pleased to see Dan Agyei and Derick Osei Yaw in action last night as the U’s beat Chelsea U21s in the EFL Trophy.

Both players got on the scoresheet and the duo switched from central and side areas through the game. However, it further highlighted the need for another centre forward.

Robinson said: “We think Dan is eventually going to be a winger and when Derick plays as a striker he finds himself outside of the box.

“They give us tremendous pace and power, which gives us a real different edge. I’m really pleased with that, but we still need a striker.
