‘The longer this goes on the harder it’s becoming’ – Robinson Hoping For Positive News

Oxford United manager Karl Robinson is hoping for some positive news this week when the government updates the country on the current lockdown strategy.

The restrictions are due to be revised on Thursday, with all relevant footballing authorities also awaiting the decision.

The Football League are unable to organise a detailed return without permission from the government, and Robinson is hoping for a positive outcome.

He told the Oxford Mail: “The longer this goes on the harder it’s becoming, that’s not just players but everyone.

“I think there’s a realisation of how lucky we’ve been with the weather up until the last few days.

“Let’s just see where we are on May 7 and where that (announcement) takes us. We do hope everyone is OK.”

The U’s players were placed on furlough leave – the government paid scheme where 80% of wages are covered – last month, which has meant they are unable to work.

Although the players have been keeping fit, structured training is something they haven’t been able to do.

Robinson added: “I’ve spoken to a lot over the phone, but we’ve given them time away from each other.

“We’ve got optional things going on which if they want to join they can, but it’s up to them.”

Just last week, the U’s boss proposed a three-stage plan for which he hopes the season could be concluded. Resuming the current campaign was the priority, with a playoff between the top eight teams a second option, before reluctantly accepting the season null and void as a third and final option.
