U’s Close in on Linfield Winger

|

Oxford United have agreed a deal with Linfield for winger Joel Cooper and are expected to seal the deal later this week, according to BBC Sport.

The U’s showed interest in the Northern Irish winger back in may, but now the 24-year-old has agreed personal terms ahead of the move according to the report.

The winger, who has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists for Linfield this season, will follow in the footsteps of Gavin Whyte and Mark Sykes, who have also made the switch from the Irish football to join the U’s.

Cooper joined Linfield from Glenavon two seasons ago and has become a key figure for the club, as he has shown this season. He has come on “leaps and bounds under David Healy at Linfield”, as reported by Northern Ireland journalist, Steven Beacom.

League One rivals Shrewsbury Town had also shown interest in the 24-year-old back in May, but the U’s appear to have won the race for the winger.

The deal is expected to be confirmed later this week, and the winger will be the U’s first signing of the summer ahead of next season.
