Oxford United goalkeeper Jack Stevens has emerged as a potential transfer target for Middlesbrough, according to The Sun on Sunday (April 4, page 61).

The 23-year-old has been one of the U’s standout performers since he came in for Simon Eastwood in December, and the Championship club are keeping tabs on the goalkeeper.

Since coming into the side, Stevens has managed 11 clean sheets from 25 League One appearances, conceding 23 goals. Prior to Stevens’ introduction, Eastwood had conceded 23 goals and failed to keep a clean sheet in 13 league games.

Stevens was out of contract in the summer but penned a new long-term deal back in February. As a result, Boro would need to table a substantial bid for Oxford to even considering allowing him to leave.

With Eastwood out of contract in the summer and almost certain to depart Grenoble Road, the U’s will need to be looking for a new goalkeeper regardless. If Stevens is sold, which would seem unlikely given the circumstances, the club would need to bring in two shot-stoppers in the summer.

Boro have relied heavily on 28-year-old Fulham loanee Marcus Bettinelli, but with the Cottagers’ Premier League status in the balance, he may be needed back at Craven Cottage next season.
