U’s Number One On The Move?

Oxford United goalkeeper Simon Eastwood could make a return to his former club, Blackburn Rovers, as reported on Sky Sports News.

After selling David Raya to Brentford earlier this month, it’s been reported that Tony Mowbray is interested in bringing two new goalkeepers to Ewood Park, with Brighton’s Christian Walton also a target.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper has been an integral part of the U’s League One status in the past three seasons after his arrival from Rovers in 2013.

The number one has made 156 appearances for the U’s, keeping 49 clean sheets under spells with three different managers.

Following promotion to League One, Michael Appleton signed the goalkeeper following his release from Blackburn, and he’s been a key figure under Pep Clotet and Karl Robinson too.

If Eastwood did decide to rejoin Rovers, a club he only made 20 appearances for in three years, it could be a controversial decision. Yes, he’d be playing in a higher division, but his game time would be limited and he’d likely become a second choice goalkeeper again.

It would be a solid signing for the Championship side, but a bitter blow for Oxford who themselves had had an uninspiring transfer window.

Following the departure of Curtis Nelson, a strong defender and a striker are high on the shortlist during this transfer window for Robinson. But if Eastwood unexpectedly decided to leave, the U’s would be left with 18-year-old Jack Stevens as their only first-team goalkeeper.
