U’s Remain 3rd After Tuesday Night Results

|

Oxford United remain 3rd in League One after their promotion rivals dropped vital points during their respective games in hand last night.

Sunderland lost 2-0 at Bristol Rovers, thus dropping out of the top six as a result, while Portsmouth and Fleetwood played out a 2-2 draw at Fratton Park.

Karl Robinson’s side could have fallen to 5th but remain just two points behind Rotherham, with Pompey and the Cod Army also now on 60 points but behind on goal difference.

In terms of the best possible scenario of results, those scorelines were exactly that. Oxford welcome Robinson’s former club MK Dons this weekend who themselves now sit just five points clear of the drop after Tranmere Rovers won at Blackpool, while Portsmouth and Fleetwood face Accrington Stanley and Gillingham respectively.

The U’s will be looking to make it six league wins on the spin this weekend and could move back into the top two if results go there way. However, if results go against Robinson’s side, Oxford could drop back out of the playoffs as far down to 8th, with just one point separating themselves and Wycombe Wanderers, who they face next weekend at Adams Park, before welcoming Pompey in back to back fixtures against their promotion rivals.
