U’s Stars Fail to Feature on International Duty

|

With Oxford United preparing to face Fleetwood Town, three of the clubs players that are away on international duty all failed to appear for their nations.

Ben Woodburn, Mark Sykes and Nico Jones all didn’t feature for Wales, Northen Ireland and the Republic of Ireland under 18’s respectively.

Woodburn was set to make his eleventh cap for Ryan Giggs’ side but the 19-year-old wasn’t even named on the bench as Wales edged past Azerbaijan thanks to a late Gareth Bale goal.

Sykes, who was called up to Martin O’Neill’s side for the second time, also didn’t feature as his Northern Ireland side beat Luxembourg in an international friendly through a first-half own goal.

Jones, who was set to make his debut for the Republic of Ireland under 18’s, didn’t come on as they lost 4-0 in their friendly in Turkey.

Karl Robinson’s side faces a tough task at Highbury with the U’s failing to win any of their ten previous encounters, with the Cod Army winning an impressive eight of those fixtures.
