The move had been on the cards after Oxford manager Karl Robinson, who had been keen to sign the 22-year-old on a temporary basis again, revealed he expected the forward to move to the Netherlands.

Robinson told the Witney Gazzette: “We believe Jerome is going to Holland, even though we offered more than the Dutch club. We did everything we had to do. We were told if we matched that (the Dutch offer) then it would be done. We more than matched it, so I was really happy with the fact the board had that clout to do so.”

Sinclair joined Watford from Liverpool in 2016, but has struggled to make an impact, and has been limited to three starts and nine substitute appearances in all competitions.

Following a loan spell at Birmingham City in 2017, he made a temporary switch to Sunderland in the first part of last season before moving to Oxford in January where he scored four times in 16 league appearances.

Sinclair will now spend the whole of next season at the Dutch outfit, who finished 12th in the Eredivisie in the 2018/19 campaign.

I’m in two minds about Sinclair not re-signing for the U’s. He scored four crucial goals but they also came at a time when the club was pulling together anyway.

That said, the fact Oxford have just Jamie Mackie as the only natural striker is a concern. Robinson definitely needs to improve this area of the field.
