U’s to Welcome Watford in Carabao Cup Second-Round

|

Oxford United will welcome Championship side Watford in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The U’s saw off League One rivals AFC Wimbledon on penalties in the first round, and now welcome a Hornets side which suffered relegation from the Premier League last season.

It is also the second successive season the U’s will host a second-tier side in the second round, having seen off Millwall at this stage last season.

The winner of the tie will face a trip to the victor of the game between Newport County and Cambridge City.

For Watford, it will be their first-ever visit to Grenoble Road, with the two sides last meeting coming in a 0-0 draw at The Manor in March 1999.

From 38 meetings between the two sides, Watford have been victorious on 17 occasions, whilst there have been 14 draws. The U’s have recorded just seven wins against the Hornets, with their most recent coming in May 1993 with a 1-0 win at Vicarage Road.

The game is scheduled for the week commencing September 14.
