Oxford United have signed Australian winger Ryan Williams. The 27-year-old has penned a two-year deal after leaving Portsmouth in the summer.

Williams has previous with the club, having spent the 2013/14 season on loan, where he netted eight times.

Out of contract in the summer, the winger was offered a new deal at Fratton Park but rejected it due to reduced terms. He scored five times and added six assists for Pompey this season.

Williams has also won promotion to the Championship with both Barnsley and Rotherham United before returning to the south coast.

Speaking to the Oxford Mail about his move, he said: “When I came last time I enjoyed it, but I was very raw and young.

“I’m coming back a lot more experienced, I’m 27 and I believe I’ve got my best years ahead of me.

“I’m at the peak of my physical ability and I think that’ll carry on.

“I think I’m going to play the best football I’ve played in my career here.

“I’ve put a good few seasons together and I think this is the one I’ll be the best version of myself as a footballer.”

With the winger out of contract at the end of the month, Oxford made their interest known and Williams was aware of a potential move.

He added: “It came up before the end of the season, so it was always something I was looking at.

“I’ve got a young family now, so I don’t want to put them through any more stress.

“If the right thing came up early enough that’s what I wanted to do. I wasn’t going to wait around.”

Speaking to the club’s official website, U’s boss Karl Robinson said: “Oxford fans will remember him as an exciting young winger and he still has that pace and energy but there is a maturity to his game now as well.

“He has won promotion out of this league before and we think there is still more to come from him so we look forward to working with him.”
