Oxford United have extended the contract of left-back Joe Bennett until the end of the season.

The 33-year-old, who joined the club as a free agent last month, has filled in well with Greg Leigh out injured.

The defender, who had been without a club since leaving Wigan in the summer, has made ten appearances.

Speaking to the club’s official website, head coach Des Buckingham said: “It has worked out extremely well.

“Joe is a top professional and slotted straight into the group and the team.

“People have to remember that he was without a club and hadn’t played for six months so to perform like he has done is credit to the way he looks after himself and the standards he sets.

“I am sure he will play a big part in a successful second half of the season.”

Bennett added: “It’s good to get things settled because this is where I want to play my football.

“We are in the play-off places, have been playing in front of big crowds and this is an exciting point of the season. I want to be part of that.

“Credit to the gaffer and to the players because I was made to feel part of things very quickly.

“We now have to put in another strong performance when we restart the league season at Carlisle on Saturday.”
