Former Oxford United coach Des Buckingham is a contender to take the vacant managers position at the club, according to Football Insider.

Karl Robinson was sacked on Sunday after a run of seven defeats in eight games, leaving the U’s just five points clear of the bottom four.

Buckingham, who was part of Chris Wilder’s coaching staff, has been hugely successful during his time with the City Group.

The Oxford-born manager won the A-League grand final with Melbourne City as assistant manager during the 2020 campaign and, more recently, won the Indian Super League League Winners’ Shield with Mumbai City as head coach.

His links to the club and recent success mean he could well be set for another spell at the club.

However, he isn’t the only former employee to be linked with a return. Former boss Michael Appleton has been made the bookie’s favourite to take the role at Grenoble Road, according to BetVictor.

Shrewsbury manager, Steve Cotterill is the next favourite for the job, while former Oxford players Andy Whing and Dean Whitehead can also be found, ahead of Lee Bowyer, Neil Critchley and Leam Richardson.
