Oxford United midfielder Mark Sykes says that having a run in the side has been the main reason for his recent good form.

The 22-year-old, who was made available for a loan move away in the summer, started only two games before October, but due to injuries in the squad and his upturn in form, the Northern Irishman has been in the eleven in 19 from the last 25 matches.

The midfielder scored in the U’s Carabao Cup second-round match against Millwall, sparking a comeback in which Oxford won on penalties, and impressed against West Ham United in the next round. He also showed a top draw performance against Newcastle United in the FA Cup.

But the youngster insists that he hasn’t changed anything other than focus.

He told the Oxford Mail: “Not much, it’s just a bit of belief in myself and confidence.

“When I wasn’t in the team at the start of the season I just wanted to train well and hopefully get a chance.

“First and foremost hard work has to be your number one. My game is quite dependent on it and I don’t mind doing the dirty side of the game where needed.

“I haven’t done much different in training, I’ve just been working hard and concentrating on the game. I just want to concentrate on doing well and hopefully staying in the team until the end of the season and further.”

Head coach Karl Robinson added: “The big one for me was Mark Sykes. I thought he came of age and looked an outstanding young man.”
