Oxford United have emerged as a possible destination for former Tottenham and England striker Jermain Defoe.

According to the Telegraph’s Jason Burt, the U’s have held talks with the 39-year-old ahead of a potential move until the end of the season.

The striker has recently left Rangers but told talkSPORT that he is looking to continue playing. Despite holding talks with Oxford, Ipswich Town and two of Defoe’s former clubs in Charlton Athletic and Sunderland are also interested.

Speaking earlier today, he said: “When I signed the Rangers contract in the summer, I stressed that I wanted to play in front of fans.

“I missed them so much, it wasn’t the same, so I wanted another season. To be honest, it’s been mad. My phone has gone mad.

“We’ve got a few options. Sunderland is one and I think it’s well documented that it is there.”

Defoe, who scored 20 goals in 57 games for England, netted 37 times from 93 appearances during his time at the Stadium of Light.
