Oxford United are set to do battle with Portsmouth as both clubs look to sign recently released Sunderland midfielder, Ethan Robson, as reported by Football Insider.

The central midfielder, who can also sit in front of the back four and on the right of midfield, looks set to stay in League One with two of this seasons playoff contenders looking at him.

The 23-year-old left the Stadium of Light in the summer, ending his 16-year stay in the northeast. He made just 14 appearances for the Black Cats but has spent time away on loan at Dundee and Grimsby Town.

He made 13 appearances during his time in Scotland, scoring twice, and he featured on 21 occasions while playing in Cleethorpes, adding a further three goals. It was under Ian Holloway where he impressed for the League Two side.

With Cameron Brannagan linked with a move away from Grenoble Road, Robson would be a welcome addition to the midfield. If, however, Brannagan does leave, then you would feel the U’s would need further reinforcements in the middle of the park, particularly with the lack of depth currently in the squad.
