Oxford United legend James Constable has said that it will be a difficult decision for players to return to action once lockdown is lifted.

The footballing authorities are hoping to resume the current campaign as of next month, but ‘Beano‘ believes the risks will still be high when training resumes.

The former striker has a young daughter who is classed as high risk as a result of health problems, and he thinks it will be tough for some players to return.

Speaking to the Oxford Mail, Constable said: “Because of Mollie and her treatment she’s classed as vulnerable.

“We still go out and do our shopping, but as a player, if I had to go in and train and I had loved ones who were vulnerable I think it would make it a very tough call.

“With people losing their lives, football does take a back seat and you realise there are a lot greater things going on.

“In that situation, it would have been given the go-ahead by the governing bodies, so to then stand up and say ‘I’m not happy with this’ would be difficult.”

Despite his concerns, ‘Beano’ can see the other side of the argument and admits it would be difficult for players to give up on months of hard work throughout the season.

He added: “I heard one of the Liverpool players say if it gets cancelled they’d understand.

“You’d be gutted in that situation after everything you’d put in and you look at Oxford for the position they’re in and what they feel they can achieve.”

A return is still not confirmed, with numerous options as to how to finish the season continue to circulate. But, until the government ease the current lockdown ruling, the football authorities are unable to move forward.
