Oxford United will take an advantage into the playoff semi-final second leg after a 1-0 win over Peterborough.

Skipper Elliott Moore netted the only goal of the game shortly after the restart.

Here are three talking points from the game.

Tale of Two Halves

Oxford began the game brighter in front of their home supporters but chances were few and far between for both teams.

Ruben Rodrigues saw an effort easily saved while Tyler Goodrham struck a fierce effort just off target.

The half started to fizzle out but it was the U’s that took the lead shortly after the restart, and it came from a set piece. A corner was whipped in towards the back post and headed back by Cameron Brannagan, allowing Moore to power a header home.

Despite taking the lead, Posh grew into the game and started to pile the pressure onto the hosts. The introduction of Ephron Mason-Clark and Kwame Poku put added pressure on the Oxford backline but they held their own very well.

It was a difficult decision whether to stick with the lead or twist and push for a second goal but the U’s defended well while looking to hit on the counter.

Clean Sheet

In 46 league games, Oxford have managed just 12 clean sheets, and three of those came from the final six games of the season. But against Posh, it was a disciplined and orchestrated display from the backline.

The clean sheet with be a huge confidence boost ahead of a crucial second leg next week, with Oxford knowing another shutout means a trip to Wembley.

Back Four

It was another brilliant display from Oxford’s back four. Moore and Ciaron Brown were, once again, solid in the middle, heading away everything that came in the danger zone.

The fullbacks were also exemplary, too. Des Buckingham had the dilemma of whether to stick with Joe Bennett and Fin Stevens or bring back Greg Leigh and Sam Long. He opted to stick and the duo held out against two of the division’s best wingers.

Win on Sky

An honourable mention goes to the fact that Oxford have won a televised game! Their record in front of the cameras in somewhat underwhelming but that streak has finally ended.
