Prolonged Postponement of Fixtures Confirmed

|

Following last weeks announcement by the EFL that the Football League would be suspended until April 3 at the earliest, the English FA have just announced they have extended that break until the end of the month.

Yesterday, the EFL announced plans to finish the current season but play will now resume at a later date of April 30.

A statement read: “The FA’s Rules and Regulations state that ‘the season shall terminate not later than the 1 June’ and ‘each competition shall, within the limit laid down by The FA, determine the length of its own playing season’.

“However, our board has agreed for this limit to be extended indefinitely for the 2019-20 season in relation to professional football.

“Additionally, we’ve collectively agreed that the professional game in England will be further postponed until no earlier than Thursday 30 April.

“The progress of COVID-19 remains unclear and we can reassure everyone the health and welfare of players, staff and supporters are our priority.”

The U’s have already missed a home game against MK Dons, while matches against Wycombe Wanderers and Portsmouth had also been suspended.

Now, however, the club will postpone a further five matches against Rochdale, Bristol Rovers, Coventry City, Fleetwood Town and Tranmere Rovers respectively.

Earlier this morning, Chairman Sumrith ‘Tiger’ Thanakarnjanasuth released a statement on behalf of the board.

Obviously, for clubs at a lower level, the financial implications could cause much more severe consequences, but the EFL have backed the lower leagues with additional funds for a period of time. Oxford, however, have been told by Tiger that there are no financial issues to worry about.
