Robinson Hopeful of Resuming Current Campaign

Oxford United manager Karl Robinson has expressed his opinions as to how he thinks the current season should be concluded.

Like the majority of other clubs in the Football League, Robinson is in favour of completing the current campaign, whenever the resumption may begin.

The EFL have backed the idea by saying they would also like to resume, but only when it is safe to do so.

Robinson told the Oxford Mail: “For me, the best way of dealing with all of these scenarios is having three different protocols in place and when you reach a certain date you move on to the next one.

“Then we all have time to digest it and work out the best way round it.

“If we don’t have this we’re all in limbo and not too sure what to do. The players need focus.”

Reports have also suggested the possibility of the top eight teams from League One and Two heading into a playoff to decide who gains promotion, while it has also been mooted about declaring the season null and void.

If clubs do return, the EFL have a proposed return date for training after May 16, with games resuming in June, but this remains down to government guidelines.

Robinson, however, would like to see the top eight teams battle it out for promotion if the season can’t be completed, before reluctantly giving his third option.

He added: “The third option is if we can’t get anything back up and running by this date the season is null and void and we start again.

“But the sanctions have to continue, so if you had a points deduction this season then that should stay.

“I’m saying this with a heavy heart, understanding that people’s safety is the priority.”

The U’s, who sit third in League One, are now seven weeks without playing, and this weekend would have been their final home game of the season.

Promotion is obviously something the club were hoping for, and Robinson added: “I just hope we’ll be able to experience these moments later on down the line.”
