Robinson on January Transfers

Oxford United manager Karl Robinson is hopeful of making some positive strides in January’s transfer window.

Following his sides impressive display in the Carabao Cup quarter-final against holders Manchester City, the U’s boss feels it will help in bringing players to the club, and will be a boost as the U’s currently have six key players out injured.

Robinson told the Oxford Mail: “Last night I had a text from one player, who we’re in competition with six clubs for, and he said ‘call me please, I loved watching that game’.

“I will be bringing in another midfield player because of (Woodburn). I’ll also be bringing in two wingers, a right-back and a left-back as cover.

“We’ve spoken to a Premier League team about a loan deal, someone we are really excited about.

“We believe this player has turned down three top Championship teams, he believes this is a development path he wants to go down.”

The U’s need to strengthen during the window and have six key players currently sidelined. One of those is Ben Woodburn who was hoping to be ready before the new year, but the Liverpool loanee has suffered another setback.

And although Robinson is hopeful of new faces through the doors, he admits that a couple may need to leave.

“There will be players going out on loan”, he added. “My job is to make this team better and I have to be ruthless.”

Midfielder Mark Sykes is just one likely player to spend time out on loan. Robinson was looking to find the Northern Ireland International a new club in the summer but decided to keep hold of him given the number of injuries at the club.
