Oxford United manager Karl Robinson has secured a striker that he desperately needed after Sam Winnall joined the U’s.

The 29-year-old forward was released from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer and arrives at Grenoble Road on a two-year deal, with the option of an additional 12 months.

Despite falling out of favour with the Owls, Winnall was prolific in front of goal for both Scunthorpe United and Barnsley.

He struck 23 times from 45 league appearances as the Iron secured promotion from League Two, before recording double figures with the Tykes during spells in League One and the Championship.

During his time at Barnsley, he won promotion via the League One playoffs and was part of the side that beat the U’s in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final at Wembley.

Speaking to the clubs’ official website, Winnall said: “I spoke to the Gaffer and he really sold the club to me.

“They are a very good footballing side and create a lot of chances so hopefully I can come here and score goals as part of a successful season.”

U’s boss Karl Robinson added: “It was important that we had another experienced striker in the building before the season starts and Sam has scored goals and caused problems for defences wherever he has been.

“It’s an exciting signing and another piece in the jigsaw for us. We look forward to working with him.”
