Oxford United midfielder Marcus McGuane has a one-year option on his contract, according to BBC Radio Oxford’s Sports Editor, Jerome Sale.

Speaking on BBC Radio Oxford’s ‘The Dub’ podcast, Sale spoke on the in-form midfielder’s current deal, which expires in the summer.

He said: “The word we have is that there is, not reported at the time when he signed a three-year contract in 2021, there is an option that Oxford United have on Marcus McGuane’s contract.

“He is technically out of contract this summer but United have an option and I think the way he is playing at the moment, it’s a no-brainer that they’ll exercise that option.”

“If they can’t start, and complete, successful contract terms. I think it strengthens their hand in those contract talks.”

McGuane, who initially joined the club on loan from Nottingham Forest in 2020, penned a permanent deal the following summer.

When fit, the former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder has been an ever-present in the Oxford team and often puts in top-drawer performances, even when asked to play in the deeper role, as had been the case under Karl Robinson.

He has turned out nine times for the U’s this season and has made 115 appearances for the club during his stay. However, despite his impressive displays, the midfielder has only scored once from those outings, which came in an FA Cup clash against Bristol Rovers in which he picked up a season-ending thigh injury.
