Oxford United reportedly came close to signing Brighton striker Evan Ferguson in January, according to Tom Roddy.

The football writer from The Times claimed in a recent podcast from the newspaper that the U’s were looking to sign the 18-year-old on loan.

However, the Republic of Ireland international stayed with the Seagulls and hit the ground running when given his first team opportunity, scoring ten goals in 24 appearances.

Roddy said: “In January, I spent a bit of time at Oxford United and they were looking to get him on loan, and thought it was going to happen, and then he comes into the first team and scores a couple of goals.

“He’s gone from potentially League One to now being told he could be top goalscorer in Europe.”

The 18-year-old, who penned a new five-year deal in April, has also netted four goals from Brighton’s opening four games, including a hat trick against Newcastle. Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has also compared the young striker to one of Manchester City’s star players, saying, “I see a hint of Haaland”.
